Every Spring I get so excited to shed my heavy wool coats and parkas for my timeless collection of trench coats. But this year as happy as I was to transition to my trenches I realized that frequently a trench coat can feel a bit formal and cumbersome. Sometimes you just need something light and easy to throw on when you are running errands or heading out to meet friends for lunch. Enter the
utility jacket. Also known as the fatigue jacket or army coat, this light olive jacket is a very casual piece that can easily transition from Spring to Fall (and with the way the weather has been this year you may be wearing it in the Summer too!). The utility jacket pairs well with so many different looks from a little black spring dress to white skinny jeans. I pulled together a collection of inspiring outfits from my
Pinterest account to give you an idea of how to wear this stylish new staple. The key to pulling off this jacket right is to keep your outfit underneath form fitting or at the minimum waist cinching since the jacket itself is loose (you don't want to look sloppy). I plan to wear my
J.Crew Factory utility jacket with a navy and white striped cotton dress, belted at the waist, and a pair of brown leather strappy sandals or espadrille wedges. I curated four jacket options (pictured below) in various price points to suit your budget because let's face it, in Canada we spend the majority of the year in some form of coat to stay warm or dry so why shouldn't we be warm, dry and stylish at the same time!
